Trampoline Info

Welcome to the Trampolines Info & Fun Site!

The history of trampolines is not very clear but the theory is that it started with the Eskimos when they played a game where they tossed an individual in the air with a taut Walrus skin.  Another theory is that is originated in England where a group of people would each hold part of a blanket and toss and individual into the air. The theories continued on to the Twentieth Century when comedians would use something called the bouncing bed to make the audience laugh.

The trampolines as we know them first came on the scene in1934 when a couple of gymnasts that watched trapeze artists that used tight and taut nets in their performances. Their first attempt was with canvas attached to an iron frame with springs and was used to train tumblers. The word trampoline came about when one of the inventors heard the word trampolin being used. The word meant diving board.  The two inventors started a company called The Trampoline & tumbling Company and produced the trampoline for the public.

During the Second World War the trampoline was used to train naval air cadets and navigators.  They were trained to be able to maneuver upside down positions, adapt to the rolling movement of a plane, lose their fear of falling and to retain the balance and control of the body. Trampolines and the exercises performed on them aid in the toughening up of the muscles in the arms, shoulders and abs when an individual rigorously bounces on them. Later NASA used trampolines to train their astronauts.

After the war trampolines were used by colleges as a competitive sport. It was an interesting concept where a competitor would have to do three stunts three times in three minutes. If he survived without total exhaustion he was the winner of the competition.
In 1956 gymnasts were trained on the trampoline for the Olympics.

For seventy years now trampolines have proved that its active use can help strengthen and balance the body of its user. Today trampolines are used by individuals and families
for entertainment as well as exercise. The introduction of the Bouncing Castle is an interesting and fun concept.  An inflated structure depicting a modern attraction such as Disney characters, castles for the prince or princess, animals and other characters,   is constructed with a trampoline floor. These structures can be found at fairs, and other festivals. The Bouncing Castle can be purchased or rented by an individual and are made to fit either children or adults. Some come outfitted with punching bags and other accessories to be used when bouncing within the castle.

Trampolines have come a long way from the theory of individuals being tossed on a walrus skin, to physical training with the armed forces and NASA and to entertaining the public in a Bouncing Castle. It is a good form of exercise but one that should be done with extreme caution as maintaining your balance on a trampoline can be very difficult especially for a beginner.
